چکیده

The stability of axisymmetric plasmas confined by closed poloidal magnetic field lines is considered. The results are relevant to plasmas in the dipolar fields of stars and planets, as well as the Levitated Dipole Experiment, multipoles, Z pinches and field reversed configurations. The ideal MHD energy principle is employed to study the stability of pressure driven shear Alfvén modes. A point dipole is considered in detail to demonstrate that equilibria exist which are MHD stable for arbitrary beta. Effects of sound waves and plasma resistivity are investigated for Z pinch and point dipole equilibria by means of resistive MHD theory. Kinetic theory is used to study drift frequency modes and their interaction with MHD modes near the ideal stability boundary for different collisionality regimes. Effects of collisional dissipation on drift mode stability are explicitly evaluated and applied to a Z pinch. The role of finite Larmor radius effects and drift reversed particles in modifying ideal stability thresholds is examined.

Ball lightning as a force-free magnetic knot

The stability of fireballs in a recent model of ball lightning is studied. It is shown that the balls shine while relaxing in an almost quiescent expansion, and that three effects contribute to their stability: (i) the formation in each one during a process of Taylor relaxation of a force-free magnetic field, a concept introduced in 1954 in order to explain the existence of large magnetic field...

Effect of Resonant and Non-resonant Magnetic Braking on Error Field Tolerance in High Beta Plasmas

Tokamak plasmas become less tolerant to externally applied non-axisymmetric magnetic “error” fields as beta increases, due to a resonant interaction of the non-axisymmetric field with a stable € n =1 kink mode. Similar to observations in low beta plasmas, the limit to tolerable € n =1 magnetic field errors in neutral beam injection heated H-mode plasmas is seen as a bifurcation in the torque ba...

بررسی شتاب‌دهی ذرات باردار از طریق باز‌اتصالی مغناطیسی در محیط‌های پلاسمایی

Magnetic reconnection, which occurs in high conducting plasmas, changes the topology of magnetic field lines and converts magnetic energy into the kinetic and thermal energy of plasma and also accelerates charged particles. This phenomenon plays an important role in changing the dynamic of laboratory and space plasmas such as fusion tokamaks and sun’s corona. The electric and magnetic fields ge...

The Propeller Regime of Disk Accretion to a Rapidly Rotating Magnetized Star

The propeller regime of disk accretion to a rapidly rotating magnetized star is investigated here for the first time by axisymmetric 2.5D magnetohydrodynamic simulations. An expanded, closed magnetosphere forms in which the magnetic field is predominantly toroidal. A smaller fraction of the star’s poloidal magnetic flux inflates vertically, forming a magnetically dominated tower. Matter accumul...
